Instagram Reel Safe Zone: What Gets Covered
Feed Formats (Square, Portrait, Landscape)
Feed ads use a 10% buffer on all sides (108px at 1080px wide). The "Sponsored" badge and reaction row sit outside the image in the card layout, so the overlay is mostly about accounting for Meta's occasional zoom/crop behavior. Portrait 4:5 is the highest-performing feed format if you're doing static image ads.
Square, Portrait, and Landscape feed formats all share the same proportional safe zone -only the canvas height changes. The overlay template is the same across all three.
Stories (9:16)
Stories use 250px (13%) danger zones top and bottom. The top is the account avatar + "Sponsored" label, the bottom is Instagram's CTA button strip ("Learn More", "Shop Now"). Both sides get a 35px margin. Symmetric layout, unlike Reels or TikTok.
Reels (9:16)
Reels have a 450px (23.4%) bottom danger zone - nearly double Stories' 250px - because the comment input and engagement row overlay the content. There's also a right-side cutout for the action buttons (follow, audio). If you're repurposing a Story creative for Reels, check the bottom edge especially - that extra 200px will cut off a CTA or price callout.
